Feral Friday

Hi there Mewmew here. I am a mostly feral kitty even though  I came here as a tiny little kitten. Usually, if you get a feral kitten really young, you can tame them fairly well but some of them just keep those feral traits.

I was a tiny little kitten when I arrived here from 'who knows where' and it took me a couple of months before I would let that hooooman touch me. I still won't let her pick me up and I will not stay in the house. I do love my hooooman and am her best friend but not a lot of touching, thank you very much. Spitty, you know what I am talking about.

Mom thinks that you have to put your hands on the feral kittens very very early to tame them. The ones that she caught as 4 or 5 weeks old can be tamed. And during the 4 or 5 weeks, she was feeding them and touching them. Then she swooped them up into one of those horrible cages and took them home and put them in a room of their very own.  I just came charging into the yard and stopped long enough to have a long talk with the hoooman.

Our friend Deb over at Zee and Zoey is having some posts about feral cats, especially the ones down in Florida at the Loews Portofino Bay Hotel. She also interviews a great gal, Christine that takes care of 20 feral cats and it has a wonderful video of the feral cats. Feral Cats

Take a look. It is kind of fun.

It's so true. I think kittens start to develop a fear for humans at the age of between 5 to 6 weeks. I rescued Cosmo and Ling when they were around that age and it took weeks before they would even come near us. They still have the fear for strangers, though. Mewmew looks very well groomed despite being mostly feral.

don't think I am allowed to comment since I adopted Cody from a rescue and he isn't a
feral in the true sense of the word. What do I know?

Our Gemini was pretty feral when we found her outside and mewing. We don't know what happened to her Mama cat or any siblings but she was mewing. She has always been skittish around all people but she got used to the Woman because the Woman hand fed her at first.

Mew mew, even I (not ever feral) and sensitive about touching. When I ask to be held, or want to snuggle up with Mom, that is fine. But I really only like a limited amount of petting.

You are so pretty!

Mom still remembers one beautiful manx b/w feral baby she came upon at one of the feral colonies she used to feed and she wanted that baby so bad, but the baby was only a few maybe 2 maybe 3 weeks old and far too young to take from their Mom. MOm knew as she held that baby if she didn't take him/her she would never get the chance again, but she knew it would be a problem with me, so she weighted it and decided not to but she lives regretting that to this day.

Your furs are so clean and fluffy. Do you let Marg brush you? And yes our friend Deb in Florida is doing good work with the ferals. We've been sharing .

You have such a wise mom. It's too bad you still don't trust her enough to let her pick you up, but I can imagine that is very scary if you have never experienced it.
01/27/12 @ 19:53
Well it's nice to know that you love your humom Mewmew but I can certainly understand that sometimes a girl just needs her space :)

Hi MewMew. I was kinda feral too until I got caught and brought inside when I was about 9 months old. It took me awhile before I let the humans touch me and stuff. Now I don't mind it...most of the time. But I tell the humans...don't over do it!!

I don't know how my account got hacked into when I was on the other host - it was Bluehost, by the way, but the webmaster my human hired put my blog on a different host that, while it is pretty good, isn't as user friendly (unless you are a webmaster).

Glad your blog got fixed. I wish those hackers would leave us all alone. I had some problems a while ago too. If those hackers have so much free time I'd like to see them put it to better use. Like cleaning a lot of litter boxes...

Oh, my, YES, mewMew I do unnerstand. I do live in the house with my Human, and I am fond of her in my way, and I permit petting on MY terms, but I am *not* anybody's lapcat, and while I sometimes tolerate being picked up and forcibly cuddled ::shudder:: it doesn't take long before I am squirming to get down (like 9 seconds maybe??)

Ha ha ha. Humans are a mixed blessing at best.

This is very interesting. I had no idea about feral cats. I thought ferals were just domesticated cats living in the wild, I had no idea they had certain traits and all. Interesting!

Our Mica Moo was feral and she is so shy and skittish. She's finally looking for scratches and enjoying for longer periods. She's so jumpy. What a lot of work she is! Maybe in 5 or 6 years she'll be like other kitties! (Its been over a year and a half since we got her.)

Thank you for introducing us to the beautiful Mewmew. I will respectfully admire from afar!! Thank you also for mentioning my posts over at the Zee/Zoey blog about feral cats and Christine Michaels from Riverfront Cats. We really hope we can educate the public about the misconceptions on ferals, and Mewmew is the purr-fect example of a feral who can successuly co-exist with a human!
