Figaro, the Therapy cat

Figaro is three years old and when he was between the ages of six months and one years old, Anya took him around to her friends houses and Petsmart to see new people and places. I never thought about taking a cat to Petsmart but that is a great idea, because they meet dogs and people there. When Figaro was one year old, Anya got him registered as a therapy cat with the Delta Society. This exam is a 30 minute test that the cat has to pass to show that he is friendly. After that, Figaro started going to a library reading program every week and also a grief counseling group for kids ages 4-12 every few months. They also went to the nursing home every other week and everyone pats him.  I am sure he cheered everybody up.

Anya trained Figaro to a harness and a stroller. She would also take his carrier to the places that he visited so if the commotion got to be too much for him, he could just sit in his carrier.

To visit Figgie's blog you can go to: Figgie

The blog tells all about Figgie's adventures in his visiting. Also he is very famous because he was on TV.  There are some great pictures there too.

So it sounds like if you start the kittens out early, they can probably do this. But I am sure it takes a special cat to be able to take all that goes on in the visits. They would have to have a very calm personality to start with, other wise, going to Petsmart etc. would freak them out and that would be the end of that. I had one cat many years ago that probably could have done it. I had to drive from my house down to the main barn where I lived, and Sassy would jump in the truck and ride with me. He loved all people and was a wonderful cat.

What a beautiful cat!! And such wise and lovely eyes! Thank you for sharing his story and the link to his really lovely blog - I love his pics! Sassy sounds so adorable. I agree though that although they can be trained, there are special cats just born to be able handle therapy work! Take care x

Figgie is a beautiful cat who is doing such good work. He must thrive on all the adoration and his gentle ways must be of comfort to the people in the nursing home who miss their own pets.

I have a kitty who would have made a great therapy cat except for the whole "car" issue...The Baby has never met a person she didn't instantly love. Totally UNcatlike!

What a great story about Figaro. Thank you for sharing. He's also a very pretty (or "handsome," as Chuck would say), cat.

Figgie sounds like a pawsome kitty! So does Sassy. Honestly? I think it take a special human to be a therapy person, just like it takes a special kitty to be a therapy cat. I know my human couldn't do it!

What a great idea. I knew they did this with dogs but didn't know cats were used. Figaro is a beautiful cat and I am sure everyone loves to have him visit.

I know that Figaro would certainly cheer me up. What a pretty cat. I can't imagine taking my Duke to Pet Smart. The would end up with some pretty soggy inventory by the time he got done...lol

So nice to be able to finally stop by and say hello to my Marg and all the family. I hope everyone on the farm is enjoying the weather and no one has been sick or feeling ill. I so sorry it has been awhile since I have seen everyone. Now I will go read some posts and get caught up :-)

That is one beautiful cat. Yes, you'd have to train them from the time they are kittens, I can see how that would work. Seems like my cats don't start "settling down" and being lovable until they are about 4 years old or so.

I just knew it from this post that there is an exam conducted to test the friendliness of a cat. Hehehe! How nice is that! :D

Figaro is an attractive cat and he looks strong and brave in the first photo and then I can see his soft side in the second pic. Wonderful!

Have a nice start of your week! ^_^

Yay for Figaro! We therapy cats do such great work. Thanks, Marg, for featuring me last week and our blogging buddy Figgie this week! Now more people know that we CAN do this job too, and not just the doggies.

This is really cool. I suppose it helps to start them out as young as possible, exposing them to many different things. I have not had any cats who would be good at this. My current three make a beeline for the bedroom when anyone but my sister comes to visit.
