Have you ever heard of a cat having a rodent Ulcer??

Hi  there my name is Splitters because I have a line down my face that splits my face and my crazy bean, just had to name me Splitters. But who cares, at least I have a name and a place to eat and a roof over my head whenever I need it.

So when I was a young kitten, my Mom noticed I had some funny things on either side of my upper lips. They looked like ulcers of some sort. So of course she had to look at them every day and I was quite good about that which suprised the bean a lot. My mother is truly a feral cat in that my human Mom has tried for two years to tame her, but she truly believes that no one will ever touch her.So I am a tiny bit still on the wild side but not too bad.  So off to the vet we went, and these ulcers are called Rodent Ulcers. The reason they are called that is because farmers believed that their cats got the ulcers from eating rats and mice. But that turned out to not be true.

No one really knows what causes Eosinophilic complex.(The big name)  The general thoughts are that the ulcers are caused by allergies probably to some kind of foods or something inhaled by the cat.  One person put their cat in the hospital away from everything it was used to, and the ulcers went away. But what happens when the cat goes back home??

Anyway, there are two treatments, one is anitbiotics which sometimes works. My mom tried the anitbiotics on me and that didn't work. So then they gave me a huge dose of prednisolone. I had to take pills for 4 months and had to take them twice a day. I was such a good girl about taking my pills. Mom would just put the pill in my mouth and I would swallow it.

Then she cut them down to once a day which was fun. Pretty soon I didn't have to take any pills. These ulcers are known to come back but so far my ulcer hasn't  which I am so glad about. The ulcers never did bother me a lot but the vet and Mom didnt want them to get a lot bigger and I think they would have.

Anyway, I am fine now and here is hoping they don't come back. Hope all you kitties and doggies have a wonderful week. Has anyone else had ulcers???

What a great name you have. It fits perfectly. I didn't know about these ulcers and I'm glad your mom took care of them for you too. I'm so glad they are gone and I hope they never come back either.

Have a purrfect day. Give my best to your mom. :)

We love your name. its pawsome. I never heard of rodent ulcer. Its good to learn about it. My kitty Jackie is sick. He hates taking meds with a passion. its always frustrating to give him meds coz i hate seeing him struggle. He is slowly getting better now.

Well, Splitters, we're glad your Rodent ulcers are gone now. And thank your bean mom for posting your thoughts about it for you. We've never heard of the Rodent ulcer.

And you certainly were good to take your pills without a fuss. We hope you got a treat being so good.

What a beautiful tortie you are! And I'm glad that that nasty ulcer went away.

You might want to tell your human mom that you might be another good candidate for a grain-free diet - it might help prevent the ulcer from coming back if it was caused by an allergic reaction in the first place.

I never heard of them either, but it is nice to know we can't get them from eating mice.

I have heard of these - when Melvin the teacup kitty was still blogging he had a mouth issue and a couple people mentioned these. His turned out not to be the same thing, but I have heard others mention it. Kirzon has a mouth infection he is taking antibiotics for right now, but they aren't the rodent ulcers, though they looked weird for a while.

We've never had them, but mom remembers a cat coming in to the vet clinic she used to work in. The kitty had rodent ulcers and it drooled a lot. She thinks the kitty was treated with steroids.
Splitters, you have a beautiful split face. It kinda reminds us of Maggie's split nose. We're so glad to hear the ulcers have not returned! We hope they never do!

Splitters, you have a great face!! I get ulcers on my mouth sometimes too. At first we thought they might be from a food allergy...but now we think it might be environmental...I seem to get them in the spring and in the fall. Most times, antibiotics help mine. They don't usually bother me much But once when I got a real bad one, I had to have a steroid shot. Uh oh...spring's coming...I hope I don't get another one!

Wow! Good thing it's all OK now, and that you were so good about taking your pills!

Pimp actually just had two ulcers on his tongue. I had no idea cats could get them until then. The vet said sometimes they get them caused by upper respiratory infections, or else he could have bit a wire and burned his tongue (which he has never done in 10 years, so I doubt that). He had the pink antibiotics for a week, and a shot to kickstart it first and he's all better now! But he was definitely not the good patient you sounded to be... I'm just glad he's all better!

Splitters, I was very interested to read your post because my brother Harley had a terrible time with eosinophilic granuloma complex. He also was borned from a feral momcat! Since it is actually a case of an immune system going haywire, my Mommeh has often wondered if it was because he was bottle fed and never nursed from his momcat and did not get those initial antibodies.

Anyway, he got TERRIBLE ulcers on his lips that got huge and swollen. For a while he had to get Depo-Medrol shots every 2 weeks or so, but they always came back. Then he was able to manage on prednisone tablets. He is much better now, and Harley just gets a short dose of prednisone when he gets a new ulcer. He usually goes months now between outbreaks. He does have some linear granulomas on the backs of his thighs, but they do not bother him much.

Splitters, you are a VERY good girl about taking your pills. We hope that does the trick and that the ulcers don't return. Our human has heard of them, but doesn't know much about them. They sound rather gross, actually!

I'm glad you got rid of the rodent ulcers. Too bad no tasty mice were involved in your treatment! I'm also glad you're off the prednisolone - it helps this sort of thing, but it's also really hard on kitty livers and the immune system longterm. It's always sort of a trade-off when you have to use it to remedy a kitty issue. My human has had to use it for me a couple of times, and she always cringed when she gave me my pill.

Hi Splitters, I just heard of Rodent Ulcers a few months ago when I took my cat in because he had some sores on his mouth. His healed up without any treatment so that probably wasn't what they were -- but I am so glad you have healed too!
