I have a skin tag

Hi there my name is Mewmew and my mom made me go to the vet last week. I have a funny looking growth right below my lip on my bottom jaw which you should see in  the picture. Mom was a total wreck figuring it was a horrible growth of some sort. It only took her two hours to get me in the carrier. I made the mistake of coming in the house and she tried to lure me in the bathroom.  I will NOT let her pick me up. I have always been a little on the wild side. She can pat me when it suits me. But I do to just sit with her sometimes.

Anyway, she finally let me out and came out a little later with the carrier and a bowl of tuna so of course I went right in. And off we went to the vet. I of course growled at the vet but he was nice to me. He thinks it is just a skin tag and not to worry about it for now. But Mom has to keep watching it so about ten times a day she comes out and stares at my chin. So far it hasn't grown anymore. I sure don't want to have this thing cut off.

Mewmew wanted me to put a pretty picture of her on here because of that awful picture of the skin tag.

While the vet was looking at me, he discovered that I have a very small case of stomatitis. Stomititis is the inflamation of the oral mucous membranes, usually in the back of the mouth.  It is somewhat the same as gingivitis so they have a name for this which is gingivostomatitis. The gums look all red all around the base of the teeth.  I do not have a bad case. There are a bunch more cats here that have it too so the vet suggested some stuff to put in the water. It is called Pet Oral Hygiene Solution. I got it at the vet but I think you can get it online.  I also found out this morning from that nice Katie at

Glogirly

That there is a food that you can get from the vet that is made by Hills Diet and is called TD Feline. So we might try that. We will have to see how expensive it is.

Mom put the stuff in the water and it has no taste or smell so we drink it just fine. Now even the opossums and the raccoons and whoever else drinks the water will have great gums. So that is always good to know.

Yeah, Mom will probably come running over a lot to look at your chin...eventually she'll calm down. It might just fall off by itself, or I think you can tie a string around it and then it falls off.

So sorry about the skin tag, but you are still furry beautiful, Mewmew! Cal had one of those on the back of his leg once. Our mom freaked out and had took him to the vet, but it was ok. Hopefully that's all yours is, sweetheart!

Our Maizy and Ferris have gingivitis and Maya has really bad teeth. Our mom puts rinse in our water and uses a gel called petzlife on our teeth to remove the tartar. Good luck with yours!

Wow we are so glad that it is only a skintag. We had a kitty that had one once. It wasn't too big of a deal. And thanks for mentioning that tooth stuff - Kirzon has tooth and gum issues so I think we will need to try it!

Mewmew, we hope your skin tag goes away soon! We didn't know kitties can get that condition so thank you for telling us about it. It's good that your vet was nice to you and told you all about it. You are very pretty Mewmew!

I have a bottle of that pet oral hygiene solution too. I have been trying to brush their teeth every other day. It took me a while to introduce the tooth paste and now they are used to the taste and one of the cats loves it. Their breath is a lot better. I am glad that the kitty tooth paste is working.

Well, I think you've got pretty covered no matter what and we are very glad it probably isn't anything really serious.

Hi Mewmew! I am glad your little skin tag is nothing bad. Harley has bad gums, on account of his EGC. My Mommeh puts PetzLife oral gel on his gums and teeths with a Q-tip.

You can have tuna for going into the cat carrier? I've only I would have known that. I just walked right into it, last time. Didn't even know I was locked in until we were well on our way.

Oh Mewmew, thankyou for showing us your skin tag. We didn't know that cats got them too. We hope it just falls off one day, just like human ones do!

Our Mum has been doing some reading about gingeval inflamation in cats and it seems that the latest research by vets in the uk shows that feeding wet foods that do not contain any cereals, grains or fillers and are by nature low carb have a significant effect on gum inflamation. The reason is that the cereal/carby stuff causes the food to stick to the teeth and gums and this aggravates the mucosal tissues. So if no food sticks to the teeh and gums there is less inflamation! Vets are recommending that cats with gum issues, whether caused by general decay or by viral issues are fed cereal free foods (hard to come by in the UK too pfft!)

We had Hills TD years ago and it didn't do squat for our teef. Glad that the stuff in the water is ok though!

Thanks so much for that advice Whicky Wuudler. That is kind of what my Mom was looking for, thinking the food must have something to do with all this. We will do a search today and see what we can find as far as food goes. No cereal, grains or fillers sounds like Mom should start cooking for me.Thanks again.

I'm sorry you have a boo-boo thing on your mouth. You are not alone in not wanting to be picked up and put in a carrier. Why, just this week my cat Lucky let me know in no uncertain terms how much he doesn't like that. He keeps showing me how much he doesn't like it when I give him his medicine. Do you get all squirmy?

Hope the skin tag doesn't grow any bigger.

Didn't know there is this Pet Oral Hygiene Solution. Our vet recommended special kibbles for gingivitis which is quite difficult to get.

Wow, you learn something new every day! Didn't know about the solution... my dog could sure use the dog version! Speaking of, one day my oldest son said, 'oh Dottie what IS that?' and then I heard a YELP and "Oh Dottie I'm soooo sorryyyyyy!" I walked in and saw Dottie had grown a skin tag - my son didn't know what it was and went to pick it off. AHHH! Poor puppy!? He felt so bad he made her yelp. He didn't pull hard, but hard enough for her to say ouch! Needless to say, Dottie was the queen of the house for the rest of the night. Oh wait, that is EVERY night.

Humans are funny, aren't they? You'd think yours would be relieved to find out that that growth on your chin is probably nothing, but instead it sounds like she's even more obsessed about it! Mine is weird like that too.

I'm really glad that the vet has some solutions for your gum problems that don't involve dental work - that's 10 times worse than having a growth cut off! We've been using some stuff to put in our water, but we may want to check out the Pet Oral Hygiene Solution, since it's vet recommended.

I'd like to chime in on what Everycat said about feeding a canned, grain-free diet. I would encourage your mom to do some more research on this topic. Unfortunately, most vets still recommend the t/d diet (or dry kibble in general) for cats, when it's really the worst thing humans could feed their cats. Thankfully, many vets, especially those specializing in cats, are starting to become more educated when it comes to nutrition. Cats are obligage carnivores and don't need carbohydrates (grains) in their diet. In fact, grains have been linked to inflammation, which, given that you have stomatitis, is obviously a problem for you.

I have used the oral hygiene solution for many years (I'm assuming you're talking about the Oxyfresh product?) and I've seen good results with it. It may not be enough to combat stomatitis, but it can't hurt.

Most of all, I'm glad you survived your traumatic trip to the vet's - never a fun excursion for a kitty!

That skin tags looks kind of strange, but better that than a harmful growth.

You left a comment on my post today about the piano cat, asking about the Felidae cat food. Canidae has two grain free formulas available as both canned and dry, and you can see the ingredients list here: http://canidae.com/cats/grain-free-cat-food/canned.html

I was also wondering if you might put the Responsible Pet Ownership blog on your blogroll? We'd greatly appreciate it. Here is our URL: http://canidaepetfood.blogspot.com/

Poor Mewmew thank god it was a small tag, they aren't to harmful at all, usually come from a lack of something. I believe it is the bodies way of getting rid of toxins. I am not sure, but Mewmew lucky to have such a good mommy!!

Well, that's too bad that you've got a skin tag. It really isn't too noticeable. We never heard of that TD Feline or Pet Oral Hygiene Solution. Sounds like good stuff. We'll have to see if we can get some of that; Jonny has to have some of his teeth pulled on Wednesday. I suppose it's too late to work for him.

I was wondering about that oral rinse, I'd be interested to see how it goes. Meg

Our Bugsy Also has Stomatitis, but his is really bad... He will need treatment for life, and surgery, and the whole nine yards! Glad yours is not bad!

We had no idea cats could get skin tags.

It's good that it's only a skin tag. I know things like that can worry people. I was worried when my old dog had the same thing on her neck.
03/07/10 @ 03:51
We didn't know cats could get skin tags either! Our humans get them. They say they're very annoying!

We don't know anything about the Hills T/D formula, though we used to eat the C/D formula, for crystals. But it didn't always stop the crystals, so our human changed us to Origen grain-free, low carb foods, (because I get mad if I don't have crunchies available to nibble-I'm a grazer) and Dr Tara always says our teeth are perfect! I guess 'cause it's got no grains to stick to our teeth!

Also we loved it so much, when our OTW started mixing it with our old food to get us used to it, we just nosed around the bowl eating only the Origen and spitting out the old food. And we wouldn't eat the old food it that was all that was left in the bowl!

We don't know where you are, but Origen is available everywhere in Canada except Nunavut, and in 48 of the US states (we're not sure which two it's not, we counted 48 on the list) and in lots of other countries too.
