I have a skin tag

Hi there my name is Mewmew and my mom made me go to the vet last week. I have a funny looking growth right below my lip on my bottom jaw which you should see in the picture. Mom was a total wreck figuring it was a horrible growth of some sort. It only took her two hours to get me in the carrier. I made the mistake of coming in the house and she tried to lure me in the bathroom. I will NOT let her pick me up. I have always been a little on the wild side. She can pat me when it suits me. But I do to just sit with her sometimes.
Anyway, she finally let me out and came out a little later with the carrier and a bowl of tuna so of course I went right in. And off we went to the vet. I of course growled at the vet but he was nice to me. He thinks it is just a skin tag and not to worry about it for now. But Mom has to keep watching it so about ten times a day she comes out and stares at my chin. So far it hasn't grown anymore. I sure don't want to have this thing cut off.

Mewmew wanted me to put a pretty picture of her on here because of that awful picture of the skin tag.
While the vet was looking at me, he discovered that I have a very small case of stomatitis. Stomititis is the inflamation of the oral mucous membranes, usually in the back of the mouth. It is somewhat the same as gingivitis so they have a name for this which is gingivostomatitis. The gums look all red all around the base of the teeth. I do not have a bad case. There are a bunch more cats here that have it too so the vet suggested some stuff to put in the water. It is called Pet Oral Hygiene Solution. I got it at the vet but I think you can get it online. I also found out this morning from that nice Katie at
That there is a food that you can get from the vet that is made by Hills Diet and is called TD Feline. So we might try that. We will have to see how expensive it is.
Mom put the stuff in the water and it has no taste or smell so we drink it just fine. Now even the opossums and the raccoons and whoever else drinks the water will have great gums. So that is always good to know.

Our Maizy and Ferris have gingivitis and Maya has really bad teeth. Our mom puts rinse in our water and uses a gel called petzlife on our teeth to remove the tartar. Good luck with yours!

Our Mum has been doing some reading about gingeval inflamation in cats and it seems that the latest research by vets in the uk shows that feeding wet foods that do not contain any cereals, grains or fillers and are by nature low carb have a significant effect on gum inflamation. The reason is that the cereal/carby stuff causes the food to stick to the teeth and gums and this aggravates the mucosal tissues. So if no food sticks to the teeh and gums there is less inflamation! Vets are recommending that cats with gum issues, whether caused by general decay or by viral issues are fed cereal free foods (hard to come by in the UK too pfft!)
We had Hills TD years ago and it didn't do squat for our teef. Glad that the stuff in the water is ok though!

Didn't know there is this Pet Oral Hygiene Solution. Our vet recommended special kibbles for gingivitis which is quite difficult to get.
I'm really glad that the vet has some solutions for your gum problems that don't involve dental work - that's 10 times worse than having a growth cut off! We've been using some stuff to put in our water, but we may want to check out the Pet Oral Hygiene Solution, since it's vet recommended.
I have used the oral hygiene solution for many years (I'm assuming you're talking about the Oxyfresh product?) and I've seen good results with it. It may not be enough to combat stomatitis, but it can't hurt.
Most of all, I'm glad you survived your traumatic trip to the vet's - never a fun excursion for a kitty!
You left a comment on my post today about the piano cat, asking about the Felidae cat food. Canidae has two grain free formulas available as both canned and dry, and you can see the ingredients list here: http://canidae.com/cats/grain-free-cat-food/canned.html
I was also wondering if you might put the Responsible Pet Ownership blog on your blogroll? We'd greatly appreciate it. Here is our URL: http://canidaepetfood.blogspot.com/
I'm super glad it's nothing serious! You are a very beautiful Mewmew. Keep drinking your water! ;)
Our Bugsy Also has Stomatitis, but his is really bad... He will need treatment for life, and surgery, and the whole nine yards! Glad yours is not bad!

We had no idea cats could get skin tags.

We don't know anything about the Hills T/D formula, though we used to eat the C/D formula, for crystals. But it didn't always stop the crystals, so our human changed us to Origen grain-free, low carb foods, (because I get mad if I don't have crunchies available to nibble-I'm a grazer) and Dr Tara always says our teeth are perfect! I guess 'cause it's got no grains to stick to our teeth!
Also we loved it so much, when our OTW started mixing it with our old food to get us used to it, we just nosed around the bowl eating only the Origen and spitting out the old food. And we wouldn't eat the old food it that was all that was left in the bowl!
We don't know where you are, but Origen is available everywhere in Canada except Nunavut, and in 48 of the US states (we're not sure which two it's not, we counted 48 on the list) and in lots of other countries too.
