Inflammatory bowel Disease in Cats

Hi there my name is Holly. I am the old woman of this family. About three years ago, when my mom was very sick, I began to lose weight and also was throwing up and had diarrhea. Mom didn't notice since she could barely get outside. This was before all the kittens arrived.

Finally she got a chance to take me to the vet and they figured out that I had IBD(inflammatory Bowel Disease).  These symptoms that I had are very common for lots of other problems too such as hyperthyroidism, chronic renal failure and in some cases, pancreatitis. Now, they did some tests on me, and my kidneys were fine. For some reasone this particular vet  did not do a thyroid test on me. So they sent me home with some  antibiotics and some predisone. They did not do the test where they take a biopsy sample, thank heavens.  Sometimes the IBD can actually be felt as a thickness in the bowel. I also had to have a huge change in diet, like cooked chicken and some special cat food. Well I wouldn't eat the special cat food.

Anyway, I came home and didn't get any better.  Well I got a little better but still had pretty bad diarrhea. So Mom took me to  another vet. Also Mom has some very good friends that are vets and so she asked them about this. They told me to try the Prednisolone instead of the prednizone. It is evidently much easier on cats. So off we went to the new vet and they agreed that the Prednisolone would be better. But they wanted to give me a thyroid test. Oh great more needles.

Guess what, I did have hyperthyroidism. So now I have two diseases.  So they started me on some thyroid pills which was twice a day but I am very good about taking pills. I just let Mom put them down my throat. It took a long time, to the dosage correct and that was three years ago. IBD is not curable but it can be controlled. I am a happy cat and still get diarrhea but not badly. I have gained a lot of weight and feel much better.

Please if your cat is throwing up or not eating, take them to the vet as soon as possible.

Hi, Holly! We are glad you are much better and have put your weight back on!

Momma says she has one of us or our Uncle Allen's cats at the Vets just about every week for one thing or another, or she's picking up food! They know her voice now when she even calls.

Awwww poor kitty cat!!!! I hate when pets get sick... they can't tell you they feel bad until they are already down the road to a disease or are pretty sick!

Holly, I'm very glad your IBD and hyper-t are being well-managed. My Annie, who is only 9, was diagnosed with hyper-t last September, but she had been asymptomatic. Only a routine senior blood panel caught it. She's on methimazole via transdermal gel twice a day, dose is good now, but unlike you, she can't be pilled. Unfortunately! You're a good girl to let your human give you the pills, Holly.

I encourage all humans to have routine blood work done annually for their fur companions, at least for older animals. Annie would have had to deteriorate quite badly before I would have noticed any symptoms, I think.

Hello Holly, what a lovely senior cat you are! IBD is horrible and it can take ages to get to grips with it, Angel had it (and hyperthyroidism - she did have one side of the thyroid removed and that worked for two years) You are very lucky that your Mum works hard with the vets to keep you so well so you can enjoy your life!

Oh Holly!! You are such a brave and wonderful kitty! Please keep taking your meds and take things easy now. Your mum is a wonderful mummy to have taken you to the new vets who helped you better than the other one. Thank goodness for your mum! I hope she is better too. Take care now and big purrs and hugs from me and Charlie! x

You're so fortunate to have your mom care so much about you that she made sure you got the right diagnosis and treatment. IBD can be very hard to control, and if left untreated, can sometimes progress to intestinal lymphoma. Diet is said to play a key role in controlling IBD, and once again, a grain-free diet can make a big difference (do I sound like a broken record?).

I've not a doubt one that your mommy would get you to the vet and make sure you felt better. I would have done the same thing. We can't let our babies be sick.

Nice to meet you Holly. Have a purrfect day and a big hug to your mommy. :)

Holly, I'm so glad your mom and the other vet figured everything out! We golden girls have enough to worry about without diseases no one knows about. I have IBD too, and apparently I had it even before I came to my mom. Mom always says she knows something is up when our vet makes faces during the exam. When she was done, the vet said she'd never felt such ropy intestines and it was no surprise I had a problem with, well, you know, but mine was too solid and it hurt, and that might be the reason I'm so little. A few years ago Kelly had the same problem as you but mom did the same thing with as you but with Prednisone, which Kelly was okay with, and after about a month she came back out of the magic room and no hyperthyroidism. I don't remember why mine started, but Kelly really missed Namir and she had no one to get between her and the young fools and she got really upset. We still have to keep an eye on Kelly, but most of the time she's okay. Stay well!

Unfortunately the symptoms you described are not exclusive for sure. I've seen FIV+ cats present with the same symptoms when they're about to go off to the bridge. Unfortunately I've also seen the same out of my Nimbus 3 years ago when he had the crystaline blockage right before the pet food recall. You're right though, it's IMPERATIVE that the cat goes to the vet IMMEDIATELY, because any of the reasons can be fatal, and worse when there's more than one thing going wrong. I am so glad you're feeling better though and are being such a trooper with all that you go through! Hip hip horray for your mom for being such a caring bean! Wish more of them were that way!

What a beautiful kitty you are, Holly. We're sorry you have IBD and thyroid problems. Thankfully, you have your mom and she was able to take you to find out what your problems were and how to care for them. We're glad to hear you're much better now. And thank you for the "public service announcement" to let us know these things can happen to kitties, too.

Holly is a beautiful girl and we're so glad you found a vet to do the right tests on her to find out her complete diagnosis...You're lucky she tolerates the pills; my cats are terrible about taking medicine and Halle (the smallest fights like nothing you've ever seen!) is totally impossible...Good luck to Holly, I hope her condition remains easily treated and she stays well.

Me too! Well, not anymore but I had Crohn's Disease for 28 years, it's basically the same thing and it was so awful.
I am completely well now, had to take tons of probiotics, stop all animal products from factory-farmed animals (grass-fed only cause of the bad fats and antibiotics) and take lots of essential fatty acids. Course I had to stop eating sugar too, which I adore :( but it's worth it to be healthy.

You are looking very good now and so happy to hear you have your two problems under control. Do me a favor and give your mom a BIG KISS from her friends at MOB. We think she is the Cat's Meow!!!!!!
