Is your beloved dog chasing your beloved cat???

The question is can dogs and cats get along all right. My answer is yes. Whenever I got a new dog, I really tried to get a puppy, simply so I could train it to not chase cats and to actually like them. In face at the moment, I have two dogs, one of which the cats really do love. Not just one of the cats loves my border collie, but almost all of them love to snuggle with her and clean her face. The other dog that I have is not as friendly but will not chase them. I truly believe that it just takes some training and some time. My cats all live outside and do come in from time to time, but they would be easy to chase. But it is so easy to train a puppy that a cat is not to be chased. Now when I got my Border collie, she did try to herd the cats but she never chased them. In fact the Border collie and some of the cats will have races. One way to train your dog to be agreeable around cats is first to teach the dog to ‘Leave it’. You can start with food and teach it to walk by a plate full of food and tell him firmly to leave it. Then get a friend with a cat and have the dog sit with a leash on, and tell him or her to ‘leave it’ Gradually have the friend bring the cat a little closer and keep the dog on a leash and keep telling the dog to leave it. Be sure to really praise the dog a lot and also you could give him a treat if he remains calm.

Another good way to get a dog used to a cat is to place the dog in a crate in a room where there is a cat walking around. If the dog gets excited and barks or yelps, again tell the dog to leave it. All this will take several sessions and some dogs will take a lot longer than others. It all depends on the dogs ‘prey level’. The one thing to remember is to not leave the dog alone with the cat until the dog and the cat are really good friends. A good place to do this if possible is in the house. That is because you have a lot more control over the dog in the house. My idea like I said before is the get a puppy and then they are used to cats right from the beginning. It really works. Also, there are some cats that will stand up to a dog. I have cats that will just plain slap a dog as they walk past, so the dog becomes very careful of that cat. But it is very possible for dogs to live with cats. Just takes some time.

All of us kitties get along well with our Dixie Dog. She is a very sweet dog and we love to cuddle with her when it's cold. Well, Saylor, the newest foster kitten still hisses at her, but she is getting better.

We don't have a dog but I have a special friend who comes for overnights once in awhile and she is nice and we like her a lot. We have a small place so it gets a little crowded, but we all get along.

we had a yorkie stay with us one summer...some of us tolerated her, the worst thing was those loud toenails, and those sloppy kisses!

What an informative blog. I must get my human Lynettea to take a look at it.

I've had good luck introducing my additions to the family by doing it slowly, not forcing them to be together until they are ready. They really can live in harmony very well.

We only have 2 cats now, and they are both indoor only cats, but we have had dogs and cats who have lived in perfect harmony on several occasions. The only dog that ever gave us a problem with chasing them was a miniature poodle. That was just pure entertainment - those little poodle legs just never had a chance of catching the cat.
keep up the nice work. You have a really fun and informative blof here.

One of the amazing pets at home is the cat. They are somehow unique and nice companions, too. If you have preferred a cat to be your pet, you know that training and disciplining them need extra effort.
