It is horrible to have to get in that darn cat carrier.

I don’t know about all you kitties, but we hate to get into that cat carrier. So my mom has come up with a few ideas to help you get used to the idea of climbing into the carrier. We all need to feel at home in this thing that carries us around. So probably the best idea is to have the carrier around the house a lot so we can go in and out and get used to being in there. Then we will start thinking of the carrier as a safe haven.

Now if our hoomans would just feed us in them, and put our toys in there, we would probably like those scary carriers a lot better. We do know that when Mom has little feral kittens that she has to take to the vet for shots or to be spayed or neutered, she brings them in from the barn where she catches them and has the carrier standing up and then she lowers them into the carrier. But when they get in the bathroom where they go the night before the vet, they usually just stay in the carrier because that is their safe haven even with the door open.

THIS is Girl Kitty.

When all the kitties started to move in here, Girl Kitty was the wildest or we should say the scariest one of all of us. So Mom put the carrier out in the back yard where we ate when we first came, and she would put Girl kitty’s food in the carrier but right near the front and then gradually moved it back to the back of the carrier. And eventually she was able to shut the door. It took about a month. She is still the one cat that cannot be picked up but she does let Mom pat her just for a minute when she gets her food. She was hurt so badly when she was a kitten, she always limps on one hind leg. The vets believe that her joint fused so she cannot straighten it out. But we believe that she is Mom's favorite because she was the first one to arrive here.

Your mom is so right about the carrier, Our Momo didn't like the carrier when we brought him home from the SPCA but we keep it out and he now goes in the carrier to sleep sometimes.

Girl Kitty is a cutie and it's nice she has Mom to take care of her. We have our carrier out all the time and we sleep in it sometimes. We just don't like it when the door closes and it goes in that big metal box with the wheels!

It's a great idea to leave a carrier out so we can get used to it. When ours is out, we like to nap in it.

Girl Kitty is so cute! We are so sorry about her leg, it makes her extra special!

I believe no sane animal likes to be put in the carrier. The best thing we can do is to make the carrier as comfortable as possible

Our mom will leave the carrier...or PTU as we call it (prisoner transport unit)...out sometimes. Ernie will go in there and sit and nap...but try to get him in it when he's got to go to the v-e-t!! Impossible...almost!!

Girl Kitty is very cute! We hope she becomes a little friendlier over time...

That's a good way to get kitties used to the carrier! We have a Sherpa carrier that opens from the top, so it's not too hard to get us in there. The hard part is getting it zipped up before we escape!

these are some good tips! Our kitty Fritz HATED the carrier -we tried all the suggestions the vet gave us but to no avail, so when it was time to go to the vet we had to use a dog cage instead as it's larger opening made it easier to get him inside.

I've never had a cat that like the carrier. I think they knew they were going to the vet. They are very smart you know.

Have a terrific day. :)

LOL my Benji loves the carrier, all I have to do is open the door and he walks right in without hassle! Unlike Chubbs, we need 2 persons for that lol, he hates going inside the carrier. I think he knows it's time for the Vet then! :)

We hate the carrier too. They usually have to back us into ours.

Excellent post. The same is true for people with dogs who use pet carriers. Using similar techniques can help them be more relaxed in the carrier. My daughter's year old Toy Manchester Terrier actually climbs in when it's time to leave Grandma's house after a visit. Sometimes she even goes and picks up one of her toys to bring too. It's so cute and so much better than trying to force the anima into a scary crate.

In a way, I think feral cats have humans under control better than us house cats: instead of just being able to go and pick them up whether they want it or not - like they do with us - the humans have to go through all sorts of work to even touch them! I'd like to see my human put in some more effort before she grabs me. Especially before she grabs me and puts me in one of those confounded carriers.

My cat has no problem with the carrier, he actually loves small little things, especially boxes. We got him a really nice cat bed and he would rather be in a box then the bed, go figure. Now my dog, forget it, very high strung in that situation and high anxiety. It is so bad I had to find a vet that did house calls. But I am dreading next month, he has to go in for blood work so it should be a very fun day.

Now, those, Girl Kitty, are some super ideas for getting us used to the carrier. We like it when we don't have to go in it...but when Bowie goes to the vet, Mikey goes into the carrier first to tell Bowie it's okay to get in there. He's such a good big brother.

Carriers are a necassary evil, practical but stressful. No alternatives.

This really is a good lesson on how to get a cat into a carrier. My sister tried it without any preparation, and her cat was frantic. It took the poor thing a day before he calmed down.
