OMG, Squeaky had to have pills

About a little over a year ago, I got quite sick so my staff took me to the veterinarian to see what was happening. But after all don’t forget, I was 18 years old which is 98 in a human’s years. So no surprise I wasn’t feeling up to snuff as they say.

So after they stuck the needle in my vein in my neck and drew some blood, which was just awful, they did a blood test and discovered that I had hyperthyroid which can be treated with guess what, pills. But I also had some other symptoms which indicated that I had irritable bowel disease. Sounds lovely doesn’t it. So that meant another pill.

So we go home and have to get started on this pill giving exercise. Well after the first pill, I decided I was going to have none of that stuff. First I would hide under the bed when I knew it was time, and my old lady staff had a really hard time because she could not get to me under the bed. She got just a little annoyed and got me out of under the bed after running under there about five times. Then she tried at least six ways to give me the pill.

She tried the pill shooter but I would NOT let her get that thing in my mouth. Now just remember, my staff consists of one person, so she had to hold me and give me the pill. . Then she tried the peanut butter deal, so I just spit the peanut butter and the pill out. She tried putting butter on the pill so it would slide on down and that worked a couple of times but most of the time the pill would slip right out of her fingers. I don’t have any teeth and didn’t have a good appetite because I was sick, to the pill pockets wouldn’t have worked.

Well we went round and around and the staff finally just put the pill in the back of my mouth and eventually I had to swallow it. But we did all these exercises twice a day and believe me that both the staff and I were totally exhausted.

I was a tough little cat but now days, I run a little bit when it is time for the pills but usually I just let her give them to me. So all you kitties, if you need some advice on how to avoid pills, just let me know.

We make it a major ordeal when our mom tries to apply flea prevention drops or trim our claws, I can't even imagine how hard we would make it for her if she tried to give us pills. We're very impressed by your avoidance tactics, but we're really glad your staff has figured it out, so you can get your medicine and stay healthy.

Pills are No Fun! I am glad you're getting used to them. Pixie used to have to take 4 different pills for her heart condition. My Mommeh molded a little cheeseball out of a bit of American cheese slice and poked that down her throat. Pixie wouldn't eat the cheese, but it held the pills all together and when the cheese got wet it was sort of slimy and easy to go down the throat.

Jan better not get any ideas of giving us pills. We won't have any of it either.

I don't like taking pills either, but if you need them to keep going then you have to take them. It is good exercise to run around a bit, but don't get too worn out. I enjoy resting a lot of the time nowadays.

cats are definitely the masters when it comes to avoiding pills. I can trick the dogs quite easily, but cats can sense when something is up.

What a fun article, Margaret. Your cat is quite the writer! I always struggle with giving medication to my cats. For the moment they are fairly healthy and eating so we just stick the pills into the center of a soft Hair Ball treat with a liquid center. We put it in with their food and they eat the "treat" first. Good post!

Mom never really tried it the nice way, she just throws it in the side of our mouth and waits to see if we swallow it. That way it's over and done with fast. But of course after a while we run from her, 'cos we know it's medicine time. We're glad that you're being good about your pills now.
BTW if you order something from the Casbah Kitten you have to include a package of Jelly Beans, those are so pawsome.

Just a suggestion....if you can't get the tapazole/methimazole (thyroid meds) down, you can always get that medication compounded into a liquid or even a transdermal gel to put on her ear. As for the prednisone (I'm assuming for the IBD), that's the kicker....can't really get around that! And I would know, I've had a few cats needing daily steroids for IBD! Ugh! Try making it as fun as possible! Feeding yummy treats before and after (tuna...yummy!) and even trying Pill Pockets to try to trick her into taking her OWN medication!!!
All the best! Love your blog!
