When you have to work or be away from the house all day, is it really fair to your dog to leave it at home by itself all day??? There are many solutions in my opinion to this problem.

A lot of dogs would be just fine to leave at home. Dogs do not understand time and don’t know how long you are gone. I know my dogs sleep all day when I am home so more than likely would sleep while you were gone too. And a friend of mine takes her dog for a 30 minute walk before she leaves which is good for the dog and the person too. What a great way to start the day with a good walk with your dog. And then another 30 minute walk when you get home.

One solution is to hire someone to come in and walk the dog or dogs in the middle of the day. I think I would feel funny about a stranger coming into my house but most people that do this kind of job are bonded and licensed and probably have other customers that you can talk to about them. So you would just have to get to know this person and hope you could find someone that a friend recommends or knows.

Another solution is that there are doggie day care places where you can take the dog for the day and he or she gets to play with all the other dogs. Course you would have to check out the place and see how it is run and if it is safe and healthy.

But my opinion is that the dog probably would be fine at home with toys. I know some people also that leave the TV on so they have noise. Any little thing to keep them happy.

If a dog gets enough attention and exercise before you leave, then the dog should be just fine. If there is a problem with having to go to the potty, then maybe you could train the dog to some newspapers.

So, there are some solutions.

Dogs are just fine at home, if they were not then they would make a law against it. I think it would be a good idea to actually film your dogs activity while you are not there to actually see what they do.

You could always have 2 dogs and they would probably keep each other entertained.

This is a great question for dog people. I think the best answer is to make sure the dog isn't alone. A companion animal such as another dog or a cat fills the dog's "pack needs."

As a pack member personality, dogs don't like being alone. It can make them feel nervous and abandoned. That leads to bad surprises when you come home.

Sometimes the best solution is: another dog!

That is a super idea to get another dog. Then they could keep each other company. I have always made sure I had two or three dogs. Dogs really don't like to be alone. Thanks for that comment.

Excellent advice and great ideas about dogs.

I don't have pets but all this advice is very helpful, I never though about how much pets needed care.

This is excellent and well written.

A lovely post you made about leaving dogs at home while going to work for the day, and makes me realise how lucky I am to be working from home as my boyfriend and I got a little jack russell puppy a month and a half ago, who is now three and a half months old, and such a joy to us. When not playing outside, she sleeps in her bed with her blanky, at our feet under the computer table. If just making a wuick trio somewhere, we often take her with us, but when going on longer outings in the day or evening, we leave her in our home office with fresh water, pellets, something to bite to pieces or chew on, and some newspaper which she uses if she has to, but she is so good and usually waits for us to let her out when we come back, to do her business. We couldn't bare to leave her alone all day, even if she was happy about it.

I think our dog likes the peace an quiet during the day. I've noticed when we are home all day that he finds a quiet place and naps for a good chunk of the day.

Well, different people have different preferences especially about caring for animals. For me, i think, dogs are created for the purpose of guarding the house.

Anyway, i am eKusinero and i found your post at EC community and decided to drop by at your site. Well, nice blog you got here.

I'm a newbie blogger and i hope to get some friendly advice from your end.
