Equine Monkey Mouth

Hi there, Joe here and I am a sad little donkey. I was born with what is called a Monkey mouth and that means my lower jaw protrudes in front of the upper jaw. It also means that in general my teeth don't meet which makes it hard to chew. Mom knew about this when she got me as a tiny baby, but we never thought it would get this bad. When I bite down on the grass, my top teeth go into my lower gums and cause ulcers. Sorry if this is making anyone sick.  Actually, that is reason why Mom was able to get me because I would have been a very expensive show donkey.

So now every six months I have to have my teeth filed to keep them from growing into my bottom gums both in the front and in the back. The little lady vet came out here last week to do just that, file my teeth. She had to give me some drugs to make me calm and that wasn't bad at all. But then they put that thing in the picture above here in my mouth. Boy, I fought that like crazy even with all the tranquilizer in my system. That is the worst thing that has ever happened to me. But hopefully eventually, I will get used to that thing.

And then that veterinarian, filed my teeth with those huge files. It doesn't hurt and she did a great job. It took a long time but don't forget that I was full of drugs so it wasn't bad at all. She had to give me double because I refused to let her put that other thing in my mouth.

So now we have to do it again in six months. But they have to do it, because the only other choice is to go to the bridge and Mom sure doesn't want to do that right now.

Hi Joe! I'm sorry you got monkey mouth, but I think you look very sweet and cute. Maybe in time you will get used to having your teeth filed. You are very brave.

You are so lucky to have a mom who loves and cares so much for you, Joe! Not too many humans would do what she does to keep you happy and healthy.

Hi Joe! Nice to meet you! You sure look like one handsome donkey. That's too bad about your teeth. It looks like you enjoy life otherwise and have a great life there. It's super that you are getting the special care you need so you don't have to go to the bridge just yet - you'll have many years of fun ahead, as it should be. All our best-

Pip, Smidgen, Minnie

We had never heard of monkey mouth and we are so sorry you have it. We hope as you get older you will stop biting the vet as she is only trying to help you eat better.

Joe, I am so sorry that your monkey mouth is giving you such a hard time! I wish there was some way they could fix it that didn't require you having to go through that every six months.

We don't feel sick reading that, Joe, we feel awfully sorry for you! You look like such a sweetie pie, though apparently you are quite feisty. We don't blame you, we'd fight too, if we had to undergo that. But you have a wonderful mom, because you deserve to have a long and happy life, not be pts just because you have a jaw problem.

Lots of purrs and Light from us, to you and to your mom!

Oh Joe we feel so bad that you have mouth problems, but we are so glad that you have a mom who is willing to do what it takes to keep you around - it is so good that they can do something to help you out. We would hate for you to have to go to the bridge from this - filing sounds like a good solution for sure. We are sending you lots of purrs and hugs for being such a brave boy!

Hi Joe! We're sad that you hafta have your teefs filed which means you gotta have that bad thing put in your mouth. But we'd rather have you put up with it than go to the bridge. That would make us sadder. It's a good thing they give you drugs! That must be kinda fun! Heehee!

Poor Joe. I'm sorry you have to go thru this all the time. Your mom must love you very much to take such good care of you. It doesn't take much love to do the easy things. But it takes an awful lot of love to do the hard things.
